Amrita Sher-Gil

(1913 - 1941) Born in Budapest in 1913, Amrita Sher-Gil received her early education at the School of Santa Anunciata in Florence, Italy. Later, she studied painting at the Academie Grand Chaumiere and the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris. In 1933, she won a Gold Medal at the Grand Salon, Paris, and was elected one of its Associates. Sher-Gil also exhibited her works at the Salon de Tuilleries before returning to India in 1934. Her works were exhibited in major art galleries across the country and are now considered National Art Treasures. Amrita Sher Gill died in 1941 at the young age of 28.
